No fewer than 17 persons have been confirmed dead and 25 others injured after a gas explosion rocked the Abule-Ado area, near the International Trade Fair Complex, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State on Sunday.
According to the acting Coordinator of NEMA in Lagos, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, a couple and their sons were amongst the people killed in the explosion.
It was also gathered that 60 students of Bethlehem Girls College situated in the area sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Nigerian Navy Hospital in Satellite town for medical treatment.
Farinloye said over 50 buildings, including the school and a popular hotel, were damaged in the explosion.
”The resulting fire later spread to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation oil pipeline passing through the area even though the pipeline had been shut down as a precautionary measure.
“The fire was eventually extinguished about 3.30 p.m. through the combined efforts of officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and Nigerian Navy Fire Tender.”
A new update by the Director-General/CEO LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyimtolu, reveals the number of casualties had increased by two.
“17 bodies have been recovered while 25 casualties are being treated for injuries on site. We sympathise with the families that lost their loved ones to the inferno and wish the injured quick recovery. We appeal for calm and urge residents to shun fake news. Operation is still in progress. Updates will continue through the course of operation while investigations remain ongoing” stated Oke-Osanyintolu.
